A set of code lists modelling the IOTC fisheries concept and its components. The latter are not generally used within IOTC forms, and are kept here for reference only.
An ad-hoc classification derived from a combination of several factors (purpose, area of operation, vessel size category, gear, gear configuration, fishing mode and target species) that uniquely describe fishing practices for groups of vessels.

Fishing boats are classified according to their shape and the purpose for which they were built. A boat that has been classified under a specific type shall not change over time, unless such boat undergoes major structural changes (e.g. significant changes in hull shape and / or size and/or material). For instance, the vessel type for stern trawlers whose decks have been modified for longlining or fiberglass longliners that have been modified for squid jigging will remain as beam trawlers and fiberglass longliners, respectively (if those modifications did not imply major changes in boat shape).
This code list includes several types of boat currently known to the IOTC: countries using types of boat other than those specified are encouraged to provide this information to the Secretariat.

IOTC CPCs and other parties are encouraged to report vessel size categories in length (i.e., length overall or LOA, in metres) for their fisheries: fish carrying capacity, measured in tonnes or m3, as well as gross tonnage (GT / GRT) can be used alternatively when LOA is not available. IOTC CPCs should make every possible effort to classify their fleets according to the categories recorded in this code list and report this information to the Secretariat.
