Definition

The term Fishing Craft refers to highly aggregated statistics per fleet, gear, type/size/range of boat and year for the entire IOTC Area. These include:

• Numbers of active fishing crafts targeting IOTC species (or sharks): Refers to the total number of fishing crafts that were fishing for IOTC species or other species within the IOTC Area during a calendar year.

• Numbers of active fishing crafts targeting other species: Refers to the total number of fishing crafts that, fishing for species other than those referred to above, caught IOTC species or main shark species as a bycatch within the IOTC Area during a calendar year.

For each stratum, the data coverage – i.e., the percentage (%) of vessels or fishing activities sampled – derived from the coverage type must be reported to assess the representativeness and quality of the estimates.

Referenced codelists

Fleet

Reference codes modelling the flag / reporting country submitting the dataset to the IOTC Secretariat.

Fisheries

Species

Reference codes modelling the species interacting with the fisheries as:

  • target species (retained or discarded)
  • bycatch species (retained or discarded)
  • sampled individuals
  • etc.

These codelists are subsets of the entries in the ASFIS list of species for fishery statistics purposes, from which they inherit the alphabetic codes, English, French and scientific names, as well as the family and order, and add the species category (in the IOTC sense), the IUCN status (retrieved from the IUCN red list of endangered species) and other characteristics of each entry such as their status of single species / species aggregate, bait species, SSI species, IOTC species.

Boat types

This codelist includes several types of boat currently known to the IOTC: countries using types of boat other than those specified are encouraged to provide this information to the Secretariat.

Mechanization types

Reference codes modelling the type of boat mechanization known in the IOTC and for which fleet / effort statistics might be provided to the Secretariat.

Fish preservation methods

Reference codes modelling the type of preservation methods being used for target species onboard boats of a given type, and for which fleet / effort statistics might be provided to the Secretariat.

Fish processing types

Reference codes modelling the type of processing applied to the retained fish.

Boat class types

CPCs should make every possible effort to classify their fleets according to the categories recorded in this codelist and report this information to the Secretariat. Additionally, the legacy form grouped by size class and type (Tab. @ref(tab:SZC)
