Definition
The term catch and effort refers to the fine-scale data – usually from logbooks, and reported per fleet, year, gear, type of school, month, grid, and species. This includes:
Surface fisheries:
Purse seine and pole-and-line fisheries: catch weight by species and fishing effort by fishing mode, 1° grid area and month strata. In addition:
Support vessels: effort data expressed as the number of days at sea by 1° grid area and month
Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD): effort data expressed as the total number of FAD visited per type of FAD, type of visit, 1° grid area and month.
Other fisheries: catch weight by species and fishing effort by 1° grid area and month strata.
Longline fisheries: catch by species, in numbers or weight, and effort as the number of hooks deployed by 5° grid area and month strata.
Coastal fisheries: available catch by species, fishing gear and fishing effort may be provided using an alternative geographical area if it better represents the fishery concerned.
Catch and effort data must be extrapolated (raised) to the total catches (and effort) for the fishery concerned.

Data content
Total number and/or live weight of retained catches by species and effort by stratum, along with information on the value (%) and type of sampling coverage used for the estimations by month, year, fleet, fishery, raising level, and geographical grid.

Reference codelists
Entities
Reference codes modelling the flag / reporting country submitting the dataset to the IOTC Secretariat.
Catch units
Reference codes modelling the units used to report the level of catches a given species, further stratified by the specific criteria characterizing each reporting form.
Species
Reference codes modelling the species interacting with the fisheries as:
- target species (retained or discarded)
- bycatch species (retained or discarded)
- sampled individuals
- etc.
These codelists are subsets of the entries in the ASFIS list of species for fishery statistics purposes, from which they inherit the alphabetic codes, English, French and scientific names, as well as the family and order, and add the species category (in the IOTC sense), the IUCN status (retrieved from the IUCN red list of endangered species) and other characteristics of each entry such as their status of single species / species aggregate, bait species, SSI species, IOTC species.
Catches and effort data sources
Reference codes modelling the source of the data provided through the catch and effort data form.
Catches and effort data processings
Reference codes modelling the processing applied to the data provided through the catch and effort data form.
Coverage types
Reference codes modelling the type of coverage for the raw information used to obtain the data provided through a specific form.
Estimations
Reference codes indicating whether the data estimated for a stratum was actually recorded in the stratum or derived from comparable strata through a substitution scheme.
Effort units
Reference codes modelling the units used to report the level of effort, further stratified by the specific criteria characterizing each reporting form.
